ramanami
1. IntroductionThe collection is inspired by the Ramnami community of Chattisgarh (India) which is known for its peaceful defiance against Indian caste system. Not allowed to enter temples due to their caste, the community members tattooed their entire bodies, in somecases even eyelids, with the name of 'Nirgun Ram' (Hindu deity) as a way of peaceful defiance against the restrictions imposed on them. A largely illiterate community, they taught themselves to read and write, to be able to read the Ram- charitmanas (holy Hindu book), and also developed their own musical and clothing tradition.
The main idea of the community is that 'God is everywhere' and there are no boundaries to how we worship God. Years later, they won the battle and were allowed to enter temples to worship.
