harmony threads

1. Introduction

The project, 'Harmony Threads' analyses our current perception of measuring and defining sustainability in luxury fashion through a hand maker's eye. It eventually questions whether the artisans of the future would be able to withstand the technological race.

Technology will grow regardless of whether crafts adapt to it. Technology has the power to keep the craft alive while erasing the craftsman. but is there craft without the craftsman? This project focuses on the true essence of the craft, the skill, the craftsmanship. Many Indian crafts are on the verge of extinction and in majority of the crafts, the young generation is unwilling to carry forward the legacy due to lack of economic opportunities. In other cases, the crafted products are unable to compete with the trendy mass produced fashion products. What if craft is made trendy and tech friendly to attract the interest of voung makers and consumers?

Through this project, we explore the interplay between the electronic and textile industries through the upcycled Kantha jacket, an exquisite embroidery craft from Rajasthan, India. Utilising conductive thread embroidery, we delve into the fascinating world of artisans, uncovering their musical preferences, cultural backgrounds, and daily routines. Kantha jacket is a Design Activism piece that invites viewers to celebrate the artistry and gain a profound appreciation for the artisans behind these unique creations, rekindling the human connection that transcends economic factors.
